Framed original ink drawing "Scarab"

The Scarab is a sacred symbol in ancient Egyptian belief - a symbol of the eternal circle of death and (re)birth, but also of protection in both this life and the afterlife. The gods most commonly associated with the scarab was Khepri and Ra. Both ancient deities were linked to the Sun, Khepri even was depicted as scarab or with the head of a scarab. The Sun is the most important aspect in almost all ancient cultures, without its warmth and light there would be no life on earth, thus, the sun was seen as the creator of life and therefore the deities incorporating this aspect, were among the most worshiped. Especially the god Ra was one of the main deities, it is his right eye that is encircled by the sun being held by the scarab in this illustration, symbolizing the solar side, opposed to the eye of Horus, which symbolises the lunar side. In everyday life scarab shaped amulets and other objects were worn to provide protection and luck, but also spiritual powers.
