The Hermit II - original dip pen and ink illustration

The Hermit has been the epitome of wisdom and spiritual as well as personal growth ever since. Typically he is depicted in the same manner as the (ancient) philosophers: as an old, wise looking man with a worn face and a long grey or white beard. The Hermit decides to live in solitude, because being undisturbed by as many external factors as possible is the only way to gain the kind of spiritual and transcendental insight he is searching for – for this insight is only to be found within himself, through extensive introspection and separation from everything superficial and material. This digging into the realm of his feelings, emotions and into the realm of his logos – untainted by any worldly matters – elevates him to higher spheres of (self-)consciousness. This state of elevation is tried to be illustrated in this drawing: The Hermit is completely disconnected from his material self and in a state of meditation, having his eyes closed and his mind focused. Rays of light shine from his head and make the light of the candles look like a weak gleam. The human skull refers to the material world and the mortality of our physical self in contrast to the immortality of the soul that shines from the Hermit.
