Screen printed Backpatch "Hellmouth"
The entrance of hell in the shape of a huge monstrous mouth with big fangs and a loathsome appearance was popularly used throughout the European Middle Ages to frighten the faithful and persuade them to live in a way that is pleasing in the sight of their God. The same effect was aimed by the numerous depictions of what lies behind the entrance, namely the many dreads and horrors that await the damned in the place of eternal torture, where odious looking demons in various fantastic shapes are delegated by Lucifer himself to torture the poor souls and bodies of the people who sinned so bad during their lifetime, that even the punishments in the purgatory were too week.
This piece is inspired by a 13th century medieval illustration in one of the numerous personal Psalters of that time and shows both the Hellmouth as the entrance to hell in the bottom part, as well as what awaits the damned in hell itself in the upper half.
ca. 38 x 27 cm / ca. 14,6'' x 10,4''. This patch is designed by myself and screen printed by my partner in our home. Each patch is printed and cut individually by hand. The colours I use are eco friendly water based screen printing inks, the fabric is black canvas that I sourced from a small local fabric store.
IMPORTANT INFO: After they're sewn on the patches are machine-washable at 40°C. To avoid fraying please make sure to use stitches that go around the edge (like buttonhole stitches) rather than stitching parallel to the edge.
