Screenprinted backpatch - Lucifer

Fueled by the many reports of various medieval visionaries who traveled to the afterlife and wrote down their experiences and impressions of the places there, Dante Alighieri finally created a literary masterpiece, that can be seen as one big fusion of the different elements told in visions like the ones of Tundal and Alberich and the Mysticists of the 12th and 13th century. In his 34th chant of the “Inferno”, Dante finally travels all the way down to see Luzifer in the lowest point of Hell. He describes him as a three faced creature with a hairy body and 6 wings, that is trapped in the center of the earth and devours the Damned with all his three mouths. Dantes description of Luzifer as well as those of the other visionaries of the Middle Ages were crucial for the picture of the Antichrist, that filled the minds of the faithful with fear and those of the artists with inspiration. The latter used these reports to bring those visions to the visual world by immortalizing them on paper and wood. Famous depictions of Luzifer are, among many others, those of Sandro Boticelli, Hans Memlig and Giotto di Bondone, that inspired also this illustration of the “Ruler of Hell”.
