Screen printed patch "Saturnus", silver ink on black canvas

As a deity of time, agriculture and abundance the ancient roman god Saturn symbolized the change of seasons and the renewal that comes with this ever recurring death and rebirth of nature. The sickle or scythe was one of his most prominent symbols that he is often depicted with and is associated with this chthonic nature, which also linked him to the realm of the underworld. Although Saturn was a highly estimated deity in the Roman world and the Saturnalia, that were held in his honor, was the most important roman festival, he was turned into a very negatively associated figure in medieval Europe. The “child-eating” Saturn became the epitome of misfortune and melancholy – a fate that many ancient gods and goddesses had to share in the eyes of Christianity, as the “heathen” gods were all negatively connoted during that period of time. The sickle along with the sigil of Saturn symbolize the harvest – the reaping of the crops of ones work throughout a season that is slowly coming to an end to make room for new beginnings.

ca. 16x11 cm. This patch is designed and screen printed by myself in my home. Each patch is printed and cut individually by hand. The colours I use are eco friendly water based screen printing inks, the fabric is black canvas.

IMPORTANT INFO: After they're sewn on the patches are machine-washable at 40°C. To avoid fraying please make sure to fold the edge inward with an iron prior to sewing it on and use stitches that go around the edge (like buttonhole stitches) rather than stitching parallel to the edge.
