Screen Printed Backpatch - The Hanged Man
The Hanged Man is the twelfth card of the Major Arcana – the 22 picture cards that are part of a complete Tarot deck. Although the man hanging from a tree might evoke negative associations, since this method of hanging by one foot was used as an actual punishment in earlier days, his expression is not at all pain- or pityful. He seems absolutely at ease, in fact, it is his own choice to be hung upside down. The Hanged Man is a symbol for self sacrifice and the opening of new perspectives – he sacrifices himself by enduring the pain of being hung to receive new views and knowledge of the world from his upside down position. The knowledge that comes from different perspectives is also symbolized by the two snakes that flank the hanged man on either side and head towards different directions.
