Screen printed patch “Lilith”
Originating from ancient Mesopotamian mythology where she was said to be a winged Goddess of the Wind, Lilith found her way to several Hebrew scriptures that form part of Jewish culture and mythology. As a rather cryptic figure, there are a lot of different beliefs and interpretations regarding her identity, but they all seem to have some things in common. Regardless of her being described as goddess, demon or spirit, Lilith always appears to be an independent female, that highly appreciates her freedom and her femininity and breaks out of hierarchical structures. She is associated with the night, darkness and with untamed carnal lust. The most wide-spread interpretation of her figure and also the one that is often adapted in art, is her being the first wife of Adam, that didn't bow to him and left him and the Garden Eden and thus became a demon. In this context, she is often associated with the serpent housing in the Garden Eden, since she is seen as a temptress herself. There can be even found depictions in western art of her being the serpent herself, with the upper body of a beautiful woman and the lower body of a snake, as Michelangelo painted her in the Sistine Chapel. This illustration shows two serpents twining around her sigil, that is crowned by a crescent moon – a symbol of both feminine energy and the night.
