Screen printed patch "The Lovers", silver ink on black canvas

The Sun and the Moon alias the “Red King” and the “White Queen” are two opposites that work together to create a perfect balance - a harmonic symbiosis of two opposite principles, just as the dichotomies of male and female, spirit and matter, light and dark. This combination of two opposing principles was something the alchemists of the 17th century were searching and longing for and the “Rebis”- the depiction of the divine hermaphrodite - was one form of visualizing this thought.

Although the Rebis is commonly depicted as a human body with a female and a male side, I decided to use the form of a double headed snake and refer to the ancient symbolism of the serpent as an emblem of primal energy and wisdom, which can only be achieved through balance.

ca. 23 x 13 cm. This patch is designed and screen printed by myself in my home. Each patch is printed and cut individually by hand. The colours I use are eco friendly water based screen printing inks, the fabric is black canvas.

IMPORTANT INFO: After they're sewn on the patches are machine-washable at 40°C. To avoid fraying please make sure to fold the edge inward with an iron prior to sewing it on and use stitches that go around the edge (like buttonhole stitches) rather than stitching parallel to the edge.
