Fine Art print "The Triumph of Death"

Originating in the Middle Ages the subject of the “Triumph of Death” is another motif in the “memento mori” tradition, just like the “Danses Macabres”, which can be found in numerous depictions in all genres of art – from miniature to mural to sculpture. The Triumph of Death reminds the viewer of the impermanence of everything worldly, that can be gone from one day to another and that has no importance in the course of eternity. All material things are worthless in the eyes of Death, for he doesn't care about who stands in his way. Everyone will end the same when he decides to bring war and calamity upon humankind - be it the beggar, the nobleman or the priest. The illustration shows the Reaper triumphing and standing upon a pile of corpses while the village the scene plays in stands in flames, denoting the fragile nature of everything material.
