With his gnarly horns, his long claws and tongue, that he sticks out frivolously, Krampus roams the villages accompanied by Saint Nicholas and plays the counterpart to the jolly Saint. In contrast to Nicholas, who delivers presents to all well-behaved children, Krampus administers to all nasty boys and girls that brought sorrow and suffering upon their parents. With his Ruten - the bundled birch branches that he is holding in his hand - he punishes them for their misbehaving, just as the devil punishes the souls of the damned in hell for their sins. The analogy with the Devil is pointed out in this illustration, where Krampus sits on his throne in front of a scenery that is best described as 'hell on earth'. The horned beast's little helper demons are bringing mischief upon the villagers, while buildings are burning and people are fleeing in fear.
