Cerberus - Hand embellished art print

The three-headed hellhound Cerberus is known as the guardian of the underworld in Greek mythology. He is a companion of the god Hades, who is the highest chthonic deity and ruler of the underworld along with his wife Persephone. It's in Cerberus responsibility to prevent the dead from leaving Hades and in this function he is mentioned in numerous ancient writings, like Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, as well as in Hesiod's Theogony. The Hellhound is depicted in a plentitude of works of art throughout the ages, starting with ancient pottery in the 6th century BC where he was usually shown along with Heracles. The twelfth and last labour of Heracles, that he had to fullfill in order to become a god and ascend to Mount Olympus, was to defeat and capture Cerberus with his bare hands – a task thought to be impossible. In this illustration the hellhound is shown all by himself in all his ferocious glory. His appearance is inspired by the elegant shape of sighthounds, merging the horror of this terrifying mythological creature with the graceful aesthetic of a sighthound.
