Death and the Maiden - Art Print
If there is a motif that seems like the epitome of baroque vanitas, then it surely is the depiction of Death with the Maiden by his side. There haven't been many motifs in the history of art that were build on an even more obviously contradictory pictorial language as this one. The maiden, young and beautiful, with long, thick hair and aesthetically pleasing shapes acts as a personification of life and simultaneously reminds the viewer of the “memento mori”. In contrast to the beauty of the Maiden, the personification of Death is an unpleasantly looking carcass or skeleton that longingly stretches out his bony hands towards the young woman. Together they act as a reminder that “media vita in morte sumus” - “in the midst of life we are in death“.
