Original Sin - hand embellished art print
The tree of knowledge of good and evil, as described in the book Genesis, is written to be situated in the Garden of Eden and its fruits, most commonly depicted as apples, were the only ones the first humans were forbidden to eat. For the fruits of this tree granted everyone who ate them the knowledge of all things – good things as well as evil things and thus the ability to see and understand what only God was allowed to up to this point. Seduced by the Serpent sitting on the Tree of Knowledge, the first humans broke God's law and tasted from its sweet fruits, which gave them knowledge and the capability to get a deeper understanding of the things around them. Even though the serpent is associated very negatively in the Old Testament – as the epitome of evil and the main antagonist of God, and ultimately as the one responsible for the Fall of Men and the struggles they had to endure since tasting the forbidden fruit, the serpent has always been a symbol of wisdom in almost every ancient culture. Wisdom and knowledge that allows humans to understand material as well as abstract things and issues can only be seen as a sin by an envious being that wants to claim knowledge for himself, which is why the serpent in the Garden of Eden should be rather seen as a friend of the humans – a being allowing us to use our senses and our reason to gain knowledge and ultimately wisdom.
This illustration is inspired by the numerous late medieval and early renaissance depictions of the Serpent as a hybrid being combining the upper body of a beautiful women (often refered to as Lilith) and the tail of a snake.
