“Salome with the Head of John the Baptist”
The death of Saint John the Baptist was a popular subject in the history of art ever since. The reason for its popularity isn't only due to the fact, that Saint John is seen as one of the most important figures of the New Testament, but much rather due to the irresistible charm of the woman, which demanded his death in the name of her mother Herodias: the beautiful Jewish aristocrat Salome. According to the gospel of Matthew she danced at the birthday feast of Herod Antipas, who was so pleased with her performance, that he offered to grant her any favour – so she chose to ask for the head of the imprisoned Baptist on a plate. Salome became the epitome of a “femme fatale” - the symbol of the dangerous female seductiveness.
