The Chariot – art print, Din A3

The Trichotomy of the Soul and its division into reason, morals and instincts, that was made popular in the modern world by the father of psychoanalysis – Sigmund Freud – has had quite some antecedents in the ancient world. One of them was Plato's allegory of the “Chariot of the Soul”, that he thematises in the dialogue “Phaedrus”. According to Plato, the immortal human soul is composed of a Charioteer and his two horses that have very divergent characters, which makes it very difficult for the charioteer to balance them out and guide them into the right direction – the direction that leads the soul to enlightenment. While the charioteer is the personification of reason, the noble white horse is associated with morals and cultural norms in contrast to the wild black horse that denotes the passions and affects. If the charioteer is unable to bring the horses to harmonize and stay on the path to wisdom, the chariot alias soul eventually falls down to the earth, where it is born into a body until it can be released again and the eternal circle can close and start anew.
