The Oracle – hand embellished art print

The oracle of Delphi is one of the best known sacred sanctuaries of western antiquity. Numerous ancient writers and philosophers like Plato or Plutarch wrote about this place that was visited by the greatest emperors and heroes of the ancient world and mythology in order to receive answers to their problems and guidance in following their path. The ruins of this sacred place, that form the frame of this illustration, can be visited up to this day. Inside of what served as a temple for the god Apollo sat Pythia, the high priestess of the temple and oracle, that received prophecies from Apollo himself. It is said that the place where the Temple was built upon once was the home of a monstrous snake, that was called “Python” and which was killed by Apollo. From the rotting body of the snake and from a crack in the earth fumes arose that helped the oracle with falling into trance. The snake in the shape of an Ouroboros is shown in the bottom part of the illustration from which the sacred “pneuma” - the sacred fumes – arise to help the oracle receive the prophecies of the God, which is symbolized by the all-seeing eye, a symbol that was later used to denote the infinite wisdom of (the christian) God. The eye is flanked from a laurel twig and a dish with spring water from Kassotis, that the oracle held in her hand while speaking the words of Apollo.
