Art Print "In Bloom"
"Media vita in morte sumus", in the midst of blooming youth, death is lurking in the shadows and is ready to strike anytime. A reminder to not take anything for granted, placed in the tradition of classical depictions of "Death and the Maiden" that were popular since late medieval times, where they were seperated from the concept of the "danses macabres" and became an independent image. There haven't been many motifs in the history of art that were built on an even more obviously contradictory pictorial language than the personification of death next to a young woman. Even without any background knowledge these depictions always speak for themselves. To enhance the contrast between life and death even more, the maiden holds a dagger in her hand cutting through her flesh while the essence of life is flowing down on her - consequently adding the layer of self-determination in life and also in death to this classical image.
