The Dragon fighting Saint Michael – art print
When the end of the world as it is written in John's Revelation comes upon mankind, a war between good and evil will be fought – represented by the angelic leader Saint Michael with his fellow angels and by “the Dragon” with his unholy legions (Revelation 12, 7-9). John describes how Micheal defeats the legions of the Antichrist and throws them onto the earth and thus frees the heavens from their presence and influence while simultaneously preparing the heavenly realm for all the blessed souls that are going to inhabit it after the Second Coming. The triumph of the Archangel Micheal has been a very popular motif in the history of art, depicting the victorious leader of God's legions standing upon the defeated Dragon. In my rendition of this apocalyptic event the roles seem to have switched. Both Michael and the Dragon have fallen down onto the earth, Micheal's spear is broken and he fearfully faces the dragon that threateningly rises up in front of him. He still holds his sword in his hand, but the situation seems hopeless. In a more secular way of interpreting this scene a few parallels to today's society and the current state of our world can be found. Greed and blindness of the mighty ones in charge are ruining the planet and killing its inhabitants, dividing society and causing irreparable harm to nature and animals. The war is not fought in the heavens – it is fought right here on earth – just like in this illustration.
