The Fate of Actaeon – art print

The hunter becomes the hunted in the mythological tale about Actaeon and his unfortunate encounter with the goddess Artemis in the forest. As Actaeon was on the hunt with his hounds in the woods, he stumbled upon a pond where he found the goddess Artemis bathing, surrounded by her entourage of virgin maidens. Infuriated about a man laying his eyes upon her naked body and the profanation of her virginity's mystery, Artemis made use of her divine powers and transformed the unlucky intruder into a stag. Not recognizing their owner any more, Actaeon got hunted down by his hounds and torn to pieces. There are numerous renditions of this tale throughout the history of art and they usually show the transitory moment where Artemis' and Actaeon's eyes meet – the moment where he is condemned to death. In this illustration I decided to show the calm after the storm. Artemis is relaxing with Actaeons hounds by the lake, while the only thing that reminds the viewer of Actaeon is the stag skull on the bottom right corner.
