Greek Sphinx - hand embellished art print

"What is that which in the morning goeth upon four feet; upon two feet in the afternoon; and in the Evening upon three?" That's the question Oedipus had to answer in order to continue his travel and enter the city of Thebes, that was guarded by the legendary Sphinx – a creature with the head of a beautiful female, the body of a lioness, the wings of an eagle and a serpent as tail. As the guardian of the entrance to the Greek city of Thebes, the Sphinx was doomed to kill and devour all travelers, who couldn't solve the riddle she was asking them. When Oedipus finally was able to solve the enigma of the Sphinx by replying that the answer is a human, who has to crawl on all fours as a baby, then walks upright on two feet and eventually has to use a stick to be able to walk in old age, the Sphinx kills herself by jumping of the cliffs. Although she's a monstrous creature that feasts upon humans, the ending of her story has a very tragic momentum. Paired with the aesthetic shape and beautiful, yet fierce features, that artists of all ages gave the Sphinx, she combines beauty, death and tragedy in a unique way.
