Hecate - Hand embellished art print

Worshiped as a goddess of witchcraft, the underworld and crossroads, but also as a goddess of the moon, childbirth and fertility, Hecate's power was as versatile as the concept of a Triple Goddess already indicates. Although she never was an Olympian Goddess, she alone had the power over heaven, earth and the underworld all at once and was thus able to fulfill every wish and desire of the mortals worshiping her. Her power over birth, life and death lead to a wide-spread Hecate cult whose members created shrines – preferably on crossroads – where they would make sacrifices and leave food offerings for the almighty goddess. Her triple form was often used to depict her along with a wide array of different attributes, of which the torches that light her way in the dark were the most popular. The key she is often holding is the key to the underworld as well as the key to unlock the secrets of occult mysteries and knowledge of afterlife, while the rope is interpreted as a symbolical umbilical cord and thus connected to her role as a goddess of fertility. The dagger is a symbol of ritual power and is cutting through illusions. Being the Goddess of witchcraft and magic, Hecate is a popular Mother Goddess in several modern beliefs and traditions and is honored especially by many Wiccans.
