Sic Transit Gloria Mundi – art print, Din A3
This illustration is inspired by a Roman face helmet from the 2nd century AD, that was found in Pfrondorf, Germany. Intricate helmets like these were not used in battle, but were much rather worn during ceremonies, parades and the like. This particular one is adorned by a stunningly detailed eagle, wings and snakes. In combination with the soft facial features it resembles depictions of the Gorgon Medusa.
The signs of corrosion of the heelmet and the Latin quote "sic transit gloria mundi" ("thus passes the worldly glory") remind us of the transitory nature of life and earthly honours.
