The Brazen Bull - fine art print with hand painted silver embellishments

According to legends, the Brazen Bull was invented in ancient Greece by a man called Perillos. This gruesome torture device was built entirely out of brass and had a door on one side, from which the delinquents were meant to enter the bull to be roasted alive by a fire burning underneath the bull, heating up the brass and killing the person within the stomach of the Brazen Bull. Perillos of Athens constructed a special system of tubes located in the bull's neck and head, turning the screams of the tortured into a sound resembling the cries of an actual bull. This torture device was later used by the Romans during the persecutions of Christians. Among the Christians burned in a Brazen Bull was the Martyr Saint Antipas, who was the bishop of Pergamon during the reign of Nero.
This illustration shows the Martyrdom of the saint who is being roasted alive inside of the Bull while tongues of fire reach high into the sky and rising fumes fill the scenery which is dominated by roman architecture that is falling apart – foreshadowing the fall of the Roman Empire.
