Windgeflüster - art print - Sighthound illustration in black and white

'Windgeflüster' is a hommage to the Sighthound. A dog breed that has been in the company of humans since ancient times and has been cherished for its elegance, beauty and for its ability to provide food for the family of its owners by hunting. Many works of art from antiquity on, through the middle ages and the renaissance, all the way to the classical modernism and contemporary art associate the Sighthound with strength, elegance and freedom. In the middle ages Sighthounds were so highly esteemed, that it was a privilege of noblemen and noblewomen to own them and there were parts of Europe that punished the killing of a Sighthound by death. Some hundreds of years later these same hounds are one of the most mistreated dog breeds in the world. Especially Greyhounds and Galgos have to endure heavy hardships and are exploited for profit in dog races and hare hunting. In Spain, where Galgos are used especially for the latter, the dogs are shot, thrown into wells, hung from trees or left to die on the streets with broken limbs, so they can't return home. Most dogs are not older than 3 years when they get disposed of. If they are lucky though, they fall into the hands of animal welfare organizations that try to rehome as many dogs as possible. This hope for a new life in a caring home is what 'Windgeflüster' tries to show. A Sighthound is sitting under a dead tree and glances into a vast landscape. In the direction he's looking at, the landscape seems friendlier, there is a tranquil lake and the trees carry leaves. A glimpse into a brighter future.
