Fine Art Print "Anima"

The principle of the dichotomy of body and soul is as ancient as it is important in almost every culture and religious tradition. Be it the ancient Egyptians who separated aspects of the physical and the spiritual, be it Plato in ancient Greece who believed in the omniscient soul that is incarnated again and again into a new body or be it the Abrahamic religions believing in an eternal life of the soul after the death of its mortal shell.
These two aspects are subject of this illustration and symbolized by the burning candle that is composed of a material (wax) and a non-material (flame/light) part. The symbolism of the all-seeing eye representing wisdom and immortality is opposed to the skulls in the bottom part of the illustration, that are denoting the impermanence of our mortal shell.
The original drawing was part of the group exhibition “Lux in Tenebris” in Lethal Amounts Gallery in LA.
